The Truth About Senior Year

Senior Year. Huh. The year of expectations and college applications. The year you are “finally going to get straight A’s” and the year of the “night of your life”, aka- Senior Prom.
In my opinion, it’s completely overhyped. All of it.

Senior Year PicComing on the last week of Senior Year (Graduating Class of 2016- WOOP WOOP!) I learned quite a few things. 1. The expectations you create in your mind the week before senior year all turn to dust within a couple months, and 2. It’s not anymore fun than junior year, sophomore year, and- dare
I say it- freshman year.

Yes, my friends. It is the same boring routine as last year.
Wake up. Brush teeth. Make breakfast. Eat Breakfast. Put on some decent clothes. Brush your hair. Makeup (maybe). Go to school. Survive school. Go Home. Hours upon hours of (mostly) useless homework. Cry. More homework. Sleep.

If you’re lucky that will be the schedule you maintain all year. However, if you’re anything like me, prepare for the worst.

Over the school year I allowed myself to slack off and skip an assignment here and there. Big mistake. Little did I know that this would t
urn into an epidemic that most seniors face and little can overcome. I was not one of those lucky people.

Towards the end of the year, this is what my schedule looked like:
Wake up 5 minutes before you’re supposed to leave. Brush teeth. Grab a granola bar (or something else totally unsubstantial) if there’s one left. Put on clothes (probably the sweatpants in the hamper that you wore two days ago). Go to school. Get there late. Sleep through my classes. Go home. Waste my life away on the internet.
I was (am- it’s not over yet) basically a hobo. I can’t remember the last time I brushed my hair or put on makeup. My hair has permanent creases due to the buns I constantly throw it in and let’s not even mention the fact that I am surviving on junk food. My skin has never been worse! 😦

You may be wondering why all these awful things happen to you as a senior. The simple explanation is summed up in one word- SENIORITIS.

Google Definition:

“Sen • ior • i • tis
noun
a supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school or college, characterized by a decline in motivation or performance.”

Yes, this is an actual thing and no you do not have it as a junior. You may think you do, but you will not fully understand it until about midway through senior year as your lack of motivation is at an all time high.

Despite this overwhelming phenomenon, you should still try your best to make it a great year. Go to all the football games and basketball games you can. Work hard on those college applications (they’re not as hard as they seem). Apply to dream colleges and ones you know you can get in. Go to the senior prom. If you’re a girl and you don’t get asked, ask someone else! Buy that risqué prom dress. Own it. And for goodness sake- smile for pictures after your graduation! When your mother cries, don’t shame her, but give her a hug and get a picture. And last but not least, don’t forget to appreciate your teachers. They are only pushing you because they know your capabilities! Make them proud.
Make yourself proud.
